How to Say "I Don't Know" in Negotiations, Presentations or Meetings 🚀
I recently had the pleasure of conducting a Communication Skills Training with one of Malaysia's favorite banks. One powerful lesson I learned was how to say "I don't know" during negotiations, presentations, or meetings without appearing weak! Here's the approach I mastered:
Key components of a strong holding answer:
1️⃣ Thank the questioner
2️⃣ Say you have to consult the subject matter expert (name them)
3️⃣ Use the magic words: "SO THAT YOU"
4️⃣ Explain the benefit
5️⃣ Share your follow-up action plan
How is this different from the usual "I don't know, I'll check and update you"? 🤔
✅ You're naming a person to consult, showing a real action plan
✅ "SO THAT YOU" highlights their benefit in waiting for a conclusive answer
✅ You present a concrete follow-up action, like emailing
The secret ingredient? ACCOUNTABILITY! 🎯
Here's a suggested script:
"Thank you, Datuk Seri Smith, for that great question.
I'll need to consult my team member, Josie, who's an expert on this topic.
Let me confirm with her SO THAT YOU can make a more accurate decision.
Once I've received confirmation, I'll call and email you immediately to keep you updated."
Elevate your negotiation game with the power of communication skills and accountability! 💥
