I often use the word "serving" when I talk about Parenting or Leadership, and this makes people REALLY uncomfortable!
I guess, in the Asian context, we are a bit more familiar with the word "servant" and we have preconceived notions on what "serving" entails.
Perhaps the opposite is true! Many of us imagine Prime Ministers and Presidents when we see the word "Leader". With all their grandeur and protocol, they hardly look like servants, do they?
Well, the interesting thing to remember here is that they're both public SERVANTS.
Recently, I've been studying really hard! And one thing I LOVED is realizing how relevant my lawyer / Barrister training is to what I do today.
As Barristers, we are trained to address interests/needs, and not on positions. In other words, we're not concerned with who is right or wrong, but rather with how we can create a solution that addresses each stakeholders' underlying needs.
And I think that is absolutely beautiful.
I think I shall spend a lot of time talking about "serving" the needs of those we lead / our Children, tomorrow (Tues, 14 Sept at 8.30pm) when I speak with my good friend, Chee-Seng, Lai, on his show, the Leaders' Dojo.
And…I'd love to hear your voice in the audience, so I know how to serve you better 😊
