"Dad, I want to quit Accounting. It's just not for me."
Woah, those are some of the scariest words we can hear as a Parent (how about "Dad, I'm pregnant"? 😱), especially when we've paid so much to get them into tertiary education 💸.
But it's not just higher education. Often, our kids come to us declaring they wish to quit a co-curricular activity, hobby ⚾, or class. How do we deal with this?
Well, before we explore the underlying issues, I think it's crucial for us ourselves to clearly understand the benefits our kid is getting from the course/hobby/activity:
🤔 What skills/knowledge are they learning here?
🤔 Actually, how is this knowledge applicable in other areas of their lives?
If we ourselves don't understand the payoffs, we are not going to be very convincing if we ask them to persevere. After all, all of us have a need to see the end goal 🎯 when committing to a project.
After that, we really need to address other possible underlying issues:
😡 Is it a case of bullying?
😭 Is it a case of falling behind academically or physically?
😪 Is it a case of losing motivation?
That last question leads in nicely to my free workshop this Saturday:
